「1番気になるのはストレートの回転数。ファストボールの球速自体は150（キロ）出るか出ないかくらい。だいたい92、3マイル（148.0キロ、149.6キロ）。時には91マイル（146.4キロ）くらいでもぜんぜん空振りをとれている。それは回転数がすごくいいということ。ボールがマッチしているのか。もともと回転数の多いピッチャーなので空振りやフライアウトを取れるピッチャーだが以前にも増して日本にいた時よりも工夫をしたのではないかという感じがする」
さらに今永のストレートを「ホップ成分が強い」とし、こう続けた。
■「甘めの球でも全部バッターが差し込まれている」
「しっかり指にかかってなおかつ押し込めている。ただスピンをかければいいというものじゃなくて球持ちもいいので、ポンと押せて最後にスピンをかけている。それがアメリカのバッターからしてみれば、すごくタイミングが取りづらかったりする」
どういうことか。高橋氏の説明は続く。
「アメリカのバッターはどちらかといえば、下からしゃくるバッターが多くなっているので、ファストボールと低めの変化球ですごくうまく打ち取っている。甘めの球でも全部バッターが差し込まれている。1、2、3のタイミングでいっているのに差し込まれている。それぐらいスピンが効いていて、バッターが予想していないくらい来ていると思う」
今永は今シーズン7試合で160人の打者に対して43個の三振を奪っている。高橋は今永の奪三振率の高さの要因のひとつに、スピンが効いたストレートと低めにコントロールされたチェンジアップを挙げた。
そして、ストライクゾーンに対する今永の考え方を「9分割で分けていない気がする」とし、次のように持論を展開した。
「4分割くらいにして大胆にストライクゾーンを攻めていっている感じがする。少々（コースが）甘くても今永選手のスピン量だったら打ち取れる、空振りをとれる。その分、ストライクゾーンに投げ込もうという気持ちが強いと思う。高めも大胆にコースを狙うというより2分割、インコースとアウトコースだけを考えているような感じがする。だからストレート系は大胆に、変化球はすごく慎重に低めに投げている」
今永は5月8日に行われたサンディエゴ・パドレス戦に先発。7回7安打8奪三振2失点と好投したが勝敗はつかなかった。チームは3－2で9回サヨナラ勝ちした。

It's not just about putting spin on it; his ball control is good, so he can push it in and then put spin on it at the end. From the perspective of American batters, it's really difficult to time.
Takahashi's explanation continues.
"American batters tend to be more swing-from-below type, so they're really good at hitting fastballs and low change-ups. Even sweet pitches are being jammed. Even on pitches thrown at 1, 2, or 3 counts, they're being jammed. The spin is so effective that I think it's coming in unexpectedly for the batters."
Imanaga has struck out 43 batters out of 160 he faced in seven games this season. Takahashi cited the effectiveness of Imanaga's high-spin fastball and low-controlled change-up as one of the reasons for his high strikeout rate.
Furthermore, he developed his theory by stating, "I feel like he's not dividing the strike zone into nine parts but rather about four parts. He's boldly attacking the strike zone. Even if the pitch is a bit sweet, with Imanaga's spin, he can get strikeouts. Therefore, I think he has a strong desire to throw into the strike zone. Rather than aiming high boldly, it feels like he's only thinking about two parts, the inside and outside corners. So, he throws fastballs boldly and change-ups very carefully, aiming low."
Imanaga started against the San Diego Padres on May 8, pitching 7 innings with 7 hits, 8 strikeouts, and 2 earned runs, but did not get the decision. The team won 3-2 in the bottom of the 9th inning.
